Frictionless design, frictionless racism – Sarah Cupples

In dit artikel schrijft Sarah Cupples, student ux design, over de betekenis van ‘meaningful friction’. In tegenstelling tot de vorige, meer filosofische, bron ‘Frictie van Miriam Rasch’ geeft dit artikel heel concrete voorbeelden over frictieloze ontwerpen, het probleem en de oplossing. 

De definitie voor frictie in user experience design die wordt aangehouden is: ‘interactions that inhibit people from intuitively and painlessly achieving their goals within a digital interface.’

De focus van de tech industrie wordt vervolgens beschreven als: ‘creating a culture of optimisation, and giving rise to the principle of frictionless design.’

‘In other words, a truly frictionless experience and its subsequent interactions, should take little to no thought to understand. Furthermore, efficient, frictionless experiences should enable users to complete tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible.’ 

Dit streven van technologie bedrijven is iets dat ik nu al in meerdere bronnen terug heb zien komen. Hoe dit zich uit is bijvoorbeeld in Facebooks ‘Frictionless Sharing’ of Uber’s ‘seamsless pickups’.

Volgens Sarah Cupples heeft dit streven naar frictieloos ontwerp twee directe oorzaken: ‘a highly competitive product market and rising user expectations.’ 

Het gevolg van al dit gemak: ‘

…according to Jennifer Eberhardt, a Social Psychologist at Stanford University, these core elements provide the perfect conditions for bias — the prejudice in favour or against a person or group of people’

Racial bias

Cupples beschrijft hierna dat iedereen (onbewust) vooringenomen over overtuigingen heeft. Het gevolg hiervan is dat, wanneer wij ons in een frictieloze omgeving begeven onze handelingen gedreven zijn zonder goede overweging: 

‘When a user engages with an interface designed to be frictionless and fast, this can result in mindless interactions driven by implicit bias. This provides little opportunity for users to examine, or even be aware of, their behaviour.’

‘As previously illustrated, racial bias, and its consequent behaviours, is more likely to flare up when users’ decisions are left unquestioned and unmonitored.’

Meaningfull friction

Een oplossing die geschetst wordt voor dit probleem is ‘meaningful friction’. Dit zijn geen onnodige obstakels die frustratie veroorzaken maar elementen waardoor de gebruiker beter reflecteert op zijn keuzes:  

‘Designers are not advocating the addition of friction that would add unnecessary hurdles, cause frustration, and generally hinder a user’s experience. Instead, there is a growing movement behind the concept of meaningful friction — friction that has been intentionally designed and introduced into user interactions with care. Such friction points can elicit reflective, informed, and positive interactions and support positive behaviour change in users.’

Vervolgens gaat Cupples in op een meer psychologische benadering van deze ‘meaningful friction’. 

‘Cognitive psychologists posit that people have two systems of thought; System 1 and System 2.’

‘System 1 thinking is automatic, involuntary, and very fast in delivering information to the user. This system is where implicit racial biases reside. Conversely, System 2 is characterised by slower, more deliberate thought.’

Het gevolg van system 2: ‘This ensures that users consciously consider their actions and have time to reflect on possible outcomes, rather than instinctively acting on implicit racial biases.’ 

‘A microboundary is an intervention that provides a small obstacle prior to an interaction that prevents us rushing from one context to another.’

In tegenstelling tot mijn afstuderen is dit artikel volledig gericht op user experience design, zelf hoop ik met mijn project ‘system 1’ uit te lichten en te bevragen. Mijn post ‘garden gestures’ vind ik hier een voorbeeld van, door de handeling van ‘system 1’ compleet uit haar context te halen en te vertalen in een dans.
